The stock market is like a giant marketplace where people come to buy and sell pieces of companies, called stocks. Imagine a huge farmers' market, but instead of fruits and vegetables, you are buying small parts of businesses. These pieces are called shares, and owning shares means you own a part of that company.
Think of the stock market as a bridge that connects buyers and sellers. On one side, there are people who want to sell their shares, and on the other side, there are people who want to buy them. The stock market makes it easy for these trades to happen quickly and fairly, just like a busy marketplace with many customers and sellers.
When you buy a stock, you become a partial owner of that company. This ownership can make you money if the company does well and its stock price goes up, or if the company pays dividends, which are like small cash gifts for shareholders. However, if the company struggles, the stock price can go down, which means you could lose money.
A good way to understand the stock market is to think about it like the ocean. The prices of stocks are like the waves - sometimes they are calm and steady, other times they rise and fall quickly. Just like a sailor needs to understand the waves, investors need to learn how to navigate the ups and downs of the market.
For beginners, it’s important to start with small investments and learn about the companies you’re buying shares in. The stock market can help you grow your savings over time, but it’s always important to remember that investing involves risks. Just like planting a tree, it takes time and care to see it grow.

These marketplaces are like Amazon (Amazon.com, Inc.), but for stocks. Some of these stock exchanges themselves are also investable because they are publicly listed companies. For example, the Nasdaq in the US is a stock exchange you can buy shares in. Their business tends to be relatively stable, as they provide the platform for all trading activity.
