The insurer says its new Medical with Smart Coverage will link medical and supplemental plans, paying eligible members up to US$7,000 per covered event from January 2027.

Cigna Corporation (NYSE: CI) has introduced what its Cigna Healthcare unit describes as an industry-first connected benefits experience that links medical and supplemental health coverage to simplify access to cash benefits for unexpected health events.
Under the offering, Medical with Smart Coverage is slated to begin providing supplemental cash of up to US$7,000 per covered event from January 2027 for eligible mid-sized employer plans.
The company positions the launch as addressing gaps in Americans' financial readiness for medical shocks and the underuse of supplemental benefits, while aligning with the growing use of high-deductible health plans in employer-sponsored coverage. A related move, the July 2026 launch of Evernorth's AI-powered Pharmacy Forward program, targets the same theme of improving affordability and efficiency in high-cost care.
Cigna's investment case rests on its scale in employer health plans and Evernorth services, with earnings still growing despite recent share price underperformance. The connected benefits launch may help short-term sentiment around commercial membership and pricing power, but it does not change the near-term risk that regulatory and affordability pressures — including rising scrutiny of PBM economics — could constrain margins.
