The programmable chipmaker could raise over $2 billion in a public listing.
Intel saw its programmable chip unit Altera begin preparations for an initial public offering that could raise over $2 billion as early as 2026, Reuters reported on 10 September 2026. The company is working toward a confidential filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Intel currently retains a 49% minority stake in Altera. Private equity firm Silver Lake holds the controlling 51% stake after agreeing to buy majority control for $4.46 billion, which established an enterprise valuation of $8.75 billion for Altera.
Silver Lake and co-investor MGX committed $3.3 billion in equity capital to finance that acquisition. Intel had previously bought Altera in 2015 for $16.7 billion before deciding to spin out a majority position to external investors.
