Distributor Aspen Pharmacare expects regional Mounjaro sales to top 2 billion rand by mid-2027, a small but early foothold for Eli Lilly in Africa.

Mentioned
Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY), the diabetes and obesity-drug maker, traded at $1,154.24 on Thursday as its Mounjaro treatment secured a concrete African growth target. Distributor Aspen Pharmacare expects regional sales to break 2 billion rand, or roughly $124 million, in the year ending June 2027.
South Africa is moving fast. The country's GLP-1 market nearly doubled to 2.8 billion rand over the past year, while Mounjaro's share climbed from 15% to 53%. Pending registrations in Kenya and Nigeria could widen Lilly's reach further.
The target is small in context. Lilly generated $9.94 billion from Mounjaro last quarter, so Aspen's entire annual African target equals only about 1.25% of one global quarter. The near-term impact on Lilly's numbers is limited, but distribution, approvals and physician adoption could establish an early lead before the regional market matures.
