Petrobras Signs 20-Year US LNG Deal

Petrobras signed a 20-year sales and purchase agreement on 14 September 2026 to buy liquefied natural gas from Sempra Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Sempra. Under the contract, Petrobras will receive approximately 0.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG.

The fuel will come from Sempra Infrastructure's contracted liquefaction capacity at the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, located in Jefferson County, Texas. Sempra Infrastructure CEO Justin Bird noted that Petrobras is the first South American company to join the firm's LNG customer portfolio.

The Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project reached a positive final investment decision in September 2025. It includes two liquefaction trains producing about 13 million tonnes per annum, lifting the facility's total capacity from roughly 13 million tonnes in Phase 1 to up to 26 million tonnes.

Phase 1 is currently under construction and plans to start commercial operations near late 2027 for train 1 and in 2028 for train 2. Phase 2 expects to begin commercial operations in 2030 for train 3 and in 2031 for train 4.
