The interim pact with the Ngarlawangga People establishes a co-management framework in Australia.
Rio Tinto has signed an Interim Modernised Agreement with the Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation. The agreement strengthens their partnership and delivers long-term benefits for the Ngarlawangga People on Country within the agreement area.
The interim pact establishes a jointly designed co-management framework. It introduces earlier and ongoing engagement across the full mine lifecycle. The agreement also provides additional long-term financial support focused on community development and cultural aspirations, while building upon the previous 2011 Participation Agreement between both parties.
This agreement is an important step in how we will work together to manage and protect Ngarlawangga heritage and Country. We will continue to listen, learn and work together to build a strong partnership that reflects Ngarlawangga aspirations and supports responsible operations on Country.
The interim arrangement sets the stage for a final, comprehensive modernised agreement. Rio Tinto operates the West Angelas site, which is located on the traditional lands of the Yinhawangka and Ngarlawangga Peoples.
