The new update allows vehicles to steer away from imminent crashes even when Full Self-Driving is not switched on.
Tesla is releasing software update FSD Supervised v14.3.9, which gives its vehicles the ability to steer away from imminent crashes. Tesla AI announced the feature on 4 September 2026, stating that the system can activate on the driver's behalf when Automatic Emergency Braking may not be enough. The car can take the wheel to avoid a collision even if the driver never engaged Full Self-Driving during that trip.
Elon Musk amplified the update on 14 September 2026 by sharing the post, generating nearly 500,000 impressions. The rollout comes as Tesla shifts FSD access entirely to monthly subscriptions. In the second quarter of 2026, about 55% of North American deliveries included an FSD subscription, and active subscriptions rose 56% year over year to 1.48 million globally. CFO Vaibhav Taneja highlighted FSD as one of the key factors driving vehicle demand.
The expansion follows public comments by Musk on 12 September 2026 endorsing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow artificial intelligence development. Meanwhile, Tesla reported that its robotaxi mileage is compounding at more than 10% weekly across seven US markets.
Tesla shares traded at $365.88 on 14 September 2026, down 18.64% year to date. The company holds a market capitalisation near $1.43 trillion with a price-to-earnings ratio around 380.
