The project will expand Caspian Sea gas output to 6 BCMA by 2029.
TotalEnergies, acting as operator with a 35% stake, announced on September 26, 2026, that it reached the final investment decision for the full field development of the Absheron gas and condensate field in Azerbaijan. TotalEnergies is developing the project alongside partners SOCAR, which holds a 35% interest, and XRG, which holds 30%.
Located in the Caspian Sea about 100 km southeast of Baku, the Absheron field contains roughly 140 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas reserves. The expansion is scheduled to begin production in 2029, raising overall field output to 6 billion cubic meters per annum (BCMA) of gas and 47,000 barrels per day of condensate. A first phase launched in 2023 currently yields 1.5 BCMA (150 million cubic feet per day) and 12,000 barrels per day of condensate.
The full field development will rely on four subsea wells, a subsea pipeline, and a fully electrified onshore processing plant designed to keep Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions below 4 kg of CO2 equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent. Gas from the project will supply Azerbaijan's domestic market and export to Turkey using existing infrastructure connected to the European network.
In line with TotalEnergies' strategy, Absheron Full Field Development is a low cost and low emissions project that will provide a long-term additional gas supply to the domestic and international markets, supporting regional energy security.
TotalEnergies entered Azerbaijan in 1996 and discovered Absheron in 2011 before sanctioning phase one in 2018. In addition to its 35% stake in the Absheron field, the French energy group owns a 1.44% interest in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline.
