Major US indices fell as calls to slow AI development hit chipmakers while rising crude boosted rate expectations.
US benchmark stock indices opened lower on Monday, September 14, 2026. The S&P 500 fell 0.77%, the Nasdaq dropped 1.27%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.34%, driven by declines across the technology sector and higher energy prices.
Selling hit semiconductor manufacturers after tech executives backed calls to slow the development pace of advanced artificial intelligence models for safety reasons. In equity trading, Nvidia dropped 2.5%, Intel slid 6.5%, AMD fell 5.5%, and Marvell Technology declined 7.5%.
Oil prices added to market pressure after Saudi Arabia closed its East-West pipeline as a precaution following attacks. Brent crude rose 3% to USD 107.67 per barrel, while WTI crude advanced 3% to USD 102.96 per barrel. The pipeline has a capacity of roughly 7 million barrels per day.
Energy gains reinforced inflation worries ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday. Markets priced in an almost 90% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate increase following a 0.3% monthly rise in core inflation for August. The 10-year US Treasury yield stood near 5%, after closing the previous week at 4.97%.
