The Renaissance Technologies portfolio
A fund of mathematicians and physicists. Here no position means what it appears to mean.

The +62.9% above is what these weights would have done over 12 months. It is not Renaissance Technologies's return.
Renaissance runs statistical models across hundreds of simultaneous positions. These are the largest ones in its latest filing.
Renaissance Technologies, founded by the mathematician Jim Simons, does not hire financial analysts. It hires physicists, statisticians and pattern-recognition specialists. Its models look for small regularities in prices and exploit them thousands of times. There is no view about a company behind it: there is statistics.
That changes how to read this list entirely. If the fund shows a large position in a company, it is almost never because it believes in that business. It is because a model found a signal, probably a short-lived one, and probably one it has already closed. The portfolio can turn over completely between one filing and the next.
Its most famous fund, Medallion, is closed to outside investors and manages only the firm's own money. What gets disclosed publicly is the other funds. The lesson for a private investor is not in the list of positions. It is in understanding that some strategies do not work by picking good companies, and cannot be copied without the same technology behind them.
Positions come from the 13F form Renaissance files with the SEC each quarter. The fund turns positions over frequently, so this document ages faster than a long-term investor's.
