India launches contactless UPI payments as Apple opens platform access.
Apple is positioned to expand its digital wallet reach as India introduces contactless payment options for its fast-growing payment network. On 10 September 2026, the National Payments Corporation of India and the Reserve Bank of India launched UPI Tap and Pay at the Global Fintech Fest.
The new feature allows contactless transactions up to a PIN-free ceiling of 5,000 INR, which is worth 53 USD. In August 2026, monthly UPI transaction volume reached 24.51 billion transactions. The total monthly transaction value reached 29.82 trillion INR, which equals 314.21 billion USD.
As of 11 September 2026, Apple lists 47 markets on its developer access roster for NFC and Secure Enclave capabilities. Apple has not yet issued an official launch date for Apple Pay or confirmed banking partners in India.
