The commercial deal aims to scale newgold winter canola in the United States starting in 2027.
Bayer finalized a commercial agreement with Neste on September 9 to jointly scale its newgold winter canola. The collaboration will expand acreage in the Southern Great Plains of the United States, providing lower-carbon feedstock for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
The company cited industry estimates indicating that global demand for these biofuels will nearly triple to around 40 billion gallons by 2040. In addition to fuel production, the high-protein meal extracted from the canola grain will be sold into animal feed markets for cattle, poultry, and swine.
Bayer plans to launch the newgold winter canola hybrids in the fall of 2027. The crop incorporates Bayer's TruFlex second-generation Roundup Ready trait and pod shatter resistance technology, designed as a rotational crop with wheat to raise farm yields and land utilization.
The initiative forms part of Bayer's intermediate biofuel portfolio, which also features camelina and CoverCress. For fiscal 2025, Bayer reported sales of 45.6 billion euros, research and development spending of 5.8 billion euros, and approximately 88,000 employees worldwide.
