Exxon Mobil shut down its Joliet refinery after the facility lost power on September 13, 2026. The company confirmed the incident in a statement reported by OPIS and Dow Jones Newswires on September 14, 2026. Plant operators began unit assessments immediately after the electrical failure.
Estimates of crude processing capacity at the plant vary across industry reports. OPIS and Dow Jones reported the capacity at 275,000 barrels per day. Reuters cited a processing capacity of 264,000 barrels per day.
The 1,400-acre complex accounts for roughly 6% of total Midwest refining capacity. The site delivers a combined daily volume of 11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel.
Exxon Mobil has not disclosed the cause of the electrical failure. The company has also not released a restart schedule or an estimate of potential financial impacts.
