Discussions follow a bauxite deal exceeding 300 million dollars with state miner Nimba.
Glencore is holding talks with the government of Guinea to invest in alumina refining and energy projects. Guinea's Minister of Mines and Geology, Bouna Sylla, confirmed the discussions in a Reuters interview published on 14 September 2026.
The discussions follow a five-year bauxite offtake and pre-financing agreement between Glencore and state-owned miner Nimba Mining. That agreement exceeds 300 million dollars in value and secures between 10 million and 12 million metric tonnes of bauxite per year for Glencore. Over the five-year term, the commitment amounts to between 50 million and 60 million metric tonnes.
Nimba Mining has historically exported over 5 million metric tonnes of bauxite. The company targets 10 million metric tonnes of bauxite production in 2026, before reaching an annual capacity target of 12 million metric tonnes in 2027.
Guinea exported 182.8 million metric tonnes of bauxite in 2025. More than 70% of those shipments went to China. The new supply arrangement expands Glencore's access to raw materials as the country seeks local industrial processing.
