Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a judge on September 28, 2026, to block OpenAI from developing new artificial intelligence models without external oversight. The request was filed as part of an ongoing lawsuit accusing the company of harming minors.
Florida sued OpenAI in June, alleging that the company misrepresented the safety of its ChatGPT platform. The lawsuit claims the tool has harmed children by providing information to school shooters, offering guidance on self-harm, and fostering addiction among young users.
In the filing, Uthmeier also asked the court to order OpenAI to block minors from accessing ChatGPT. In addition, the state requested an injunction prohibiting the company from giving its chat platform human attributes.
A spokesperson for OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
