The new metric tracks daily social and political risk across Colombia.
Grupo Cibest, the parent company of Bancolombia, launched a new tracking tool on 3 September 2026 called the Sociopolitical Momentum Indicator. The metric quantifies how favorable or uncertain Colombia's political and social environment is on a daily scale from 0 to 1, where 0.5 points marks the threshold between uncertainty and fluid conditions.
The index closed August at 0.50 points, rising 0.01 points from July and standing 0.03 points above its annual average of 0.47. According to Grupo Cibest, the indicator has gained 19.6% compared to the start of 2026. The metric hit an August peak of 0.51 points on 17 August, reaching its highest level since 26 December 2024, before progress stalled starting 19 August.
Entity analysts Manuela Bernal, José Luis Mojica, and Laura Clavijo projected that 2026 could post one of the largest cumulative improvements in Colombia's sociopolitical environment, surpassed only by years such as 2007. The index has stayed consistently above the 0.5 threshold since 14 August, which the macroeconomic research team noted could indicate a longer transition toward favorable domestic conditions.
Grupo Cibest builds the tool using data from the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone, known as GDELT. The platform monitors global news media in real time, classifies events by cooperation or conflict, and assigns relevance weights to evaluate the daily share of uncertain events affecting Colombia.
