Lockheed Martin unveils PAC-3 Edge missile interceptor
Testing will begin in 2027 to prepare for deployment by 2031 under a competitive U.S. Army program.
Lockheed Martin presented its new PAC-3 Edge interceptor on October 9, 2026. The system is designed to defend against hypersonic and advanced missile threats as part of the U.S. Army's Future Interceptor program, which is currently in competition. The Army selected Lockheed Martin to progress into the next stage of development.
The company plans to advance development and begin testing PAC-3 Edge in 2027, aiming for rapid deployment by 2031. The interceptor builds on the PAC-3 family of missiles, including the PAC-3 MSE, the PAC-3 CRI, and the lower-cost PAC-3 ACE.
Lockheed Martin invested $250 million into its Strigo Product Center to design a new seeker for the interceptor. The weapon also incorporates control system upgrades alongside a multi-pulse solid rocket motor built by Northrop Grumman to provide precision thrust during flight.
Lockheed Martin's PAC-3 Edge interceptor leverages the combat-proven PAC-3 MSE, delivering even greater maneuverability, power and velocity to ensure the Army's layered defensive architecture remains the most advanced in the world.
PAC-3 Edge is engineered to operate across higher altitudes and longer ranges. The system is designed to integrate with the Integrated Battle Command System, the M903 launcher, containerized launchers, and HIMARS Flex.
