Sabesp plans 25 billion reais to clean up Tietê River

Sabesp announced on Monday, September 21, that investments in structural projects for the Integra Tietê program should reach 25 billion reais, factoring in its new execution phase. Started in 2023 and slated for completion in 2028, the initiative is a partnership between the São Paulo State Government and the utility to restore water quality across the Tietê and Pinheiros river basins.

The first phase benefited more than 3 million people across 42 project packages, reaching 43% execution and covering the expansion of six treatment plants. The new phase includes 112 sewage pumping stations, 460 kilometers of pipelines, and expanded treatment facilities, aiming to reach an additional 1.75 million people across 650,000 properties.

Unlike the first phase focused on major treatment plants, the new phase targets underserved areas such as Caieiras, Cajamar, Carapicuíba, Cotia, Franco da Rocha, Francisco Morato, Itapevi, Jandira, Osasco, and Santana de Parnaíba, along with parts of northern and western São Paulo city. In Cajamar, the Polvilho treatment plant will double capacity to 200 liters per second. The first two contracts in Osasco have been under way since 2025, and all remaining lots are now contracted.

Over the past two years, Sabesp measurements show a reduction of 46 metric tons per day in the pollution load carried by the Tietê River. The new phase will directly affect 52 watercourses, comprising 32 streams, 16 creeks, and four rivers: Cotia, Juqueri, Sapiantã, and São João.
