TIM seeks to use Unifique spectrum in Brazil

TIM is seeking approval to use the 700 MHz spectrum band from regional operators Unifique and Amazônia 5G on a secondary basis. Anatel reporting commissioner Octavio Pieranti ordered a diligence process on 15 September that requests fresh statements from market competitors and regulatory bodies.

The diligence calls for comments from Claro and Vivo, which joined the proceeding as interested third parties and filed identical requests to access the band on a secondary basis. The proceeding also seeks input from Anatel's Superintendency of Regulatory Planning, the Superintendency of Competition, and gives the Superintendency of Grants and Resources the option to submit new comments.

The deadline for submissions from the telecom companies, including Unifique and Amazônia 5G, closes on Tuesday, 15 September. Anatel's internal superintendencies have until early next week to provide their feedback.

Unifique already expressed support for TIM's request. Competitors and regional internet service providers are watching the case closely as a signal of a potential network sharing agreement between TIM and Unifique, or as a strategic move by TIM to secure 700 MHz coverage if the regional license holders fail to launch operations.
