Lawmakers question how the shopping tool handles Made in USA origin claims.
Walmart faces a bipartisan push for Federal Trade Commission scrutiny of its Sparky AI shopping assistant. US Senators Tammy Baldwin and Rick Scott asked the regulatory agency to investigate how the digital tool handles Made in USA merchandise.
The senators cited research alleging that Sparky can identify American-made products and detect questionable country-of-origin claims, but fails to consistently surface those items or flag potentially misleading listings. The request calls for an inquiry and does not represent an FTC finding of wrongdoing against the retailer. Reuters reported that neither Walmart nor the FTC had commented on the request.
Walmart shares traded at $107.18 on Friday, September 18, 2026.
