A $20 million loan will fund a wind project supplying the miner's Nunavut operation.
Agnico Eagle Mines Limited will supply clean power to its Hope Bay mine in Nunavut through a new wind initiative. On 9 September 2026, the Canada Infrastructure Bank reached financial close on a $20 million project loan to the Kitikmeot Tugliq Limited Partnership. The Inuit-led venture between the Kitikmeot Inuit Association and Tugliq Energy will build and operate the Hope Bay Wind Project.
The renewable installation sits adjacent to the mine and features a 4.2-megawatt wind turbine along with a 4-megawatt battery energy storage system. Agnico Eagle entered into a long-term power purchase agreement for the electricity, which will integrate into the site's existing energy infrastructure to support ongoing construction and mining operations. The mine recently reached a positive investment decision.
The system is expected to cut diesel fuel use by up to three million litres annually and lower emissions by roughly 13,000 tonnes per year. Natural Resources Canada provided an additional $25 million contribution through the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways program, while the project expects to generate 15 jobs during peak construction.
Through our collaboration with Kitikmeot Corporation and Tugliq Energy, we are supporting an Inuit-led initiative that will help reduce diesel consumption, strengthen the long-term sustainability of our operations and create lasting benefits for the Kitikmeot Region.
