The platform targets stalled residential developments with last-dollar gap financing.
Airbnb announced the launch of the Airbnb Housing Accelerator on 14 September 2026. The company committed an initial $250 million in last-dollar financing to establish the new investment fund. The initiative aims to help finance residential projects that are entitled and ready to build but remain stalled due to funding shortages.
Nationwide, an estimated 750,000 housing units have received entitlements but lack necessary financing. Airbnb projects that its $250 million commitment will unlock a total of $5 billion in capital investments over a 10-year time horizon.
The company also announced its first project commitment under the program. Airbnb committed $6.4 million in gap financing for the St. John redevelopment project in Austin. That investment directly finances 201 affordable housing units and enables an additional 325 companion mixed-income development units. The entire redevelopment plan targets a minimum of 500 total combined housing units.
Alongside the construction fund, Airbnb established a $5 million Housing Innovation Prize program. The company plans to distribute five awards under the initiative, providing a grant of $1 million to each winning innovator.
