Broadcom is working to assemble a private debt package exceeding $50 billion to finance custom artificial intelligence chip production for OpenAI, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal on October 7, 2026. The company is in early-stage discussions with private market managers Apollo Global Management and Blackstone.

The custom chip initiative, known internally as Nexus, aims to deploy multiple gigawatts of capacity through 2029. Tech firms are pursuing these alternative custom chips to secure dedicated infrastructure beyond standard hardware from Nvidia.

The talks are part of a broader push into private credit as public bond markets and internal cash flows face pressure from data-center expansion. Oracle is negotiating with Apollo and Goldman Sachs to fund hardware for a 1-gigawatt facility using an off-balance-sheet leasing entity. Meanwhile, SpaceX has approached lenders about a $40 billion debt structure to purchase Nvidia processors, with deals targeting completion by the end of the year.
