Amazon cuts fewer than 1,000 corporate jobs
The reductions hit roles in the Stores unit across the U.S., India, and the U.K.
Amazon confirmed a new round of job cuts on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, primarily in its Stores division. According to a person familiar with the matter cited by Business Insider, the reductions affect fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees across the U.S., India, and the U.K. Impacted areas include customer service, marketplace support, and engineering roles within retail operations.
Amazon stated that the changes aim to reshape parts of its Stores business around current priorities. The company said it was eliminating a small number of roles and would support affected workers during the transition. The cuts coincided with Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days promotional event.
The move follows the elimination of roughly 30,000 corporate jobs late last year and in January, carried out by CEO Andy Jassy to reduce management layers and lower costs. Internal employee messages showed concerns regarding severance packages, internal job transfers, and potential further cuts. Some managers have scaled back planning for upcoming quarters due to shifting team priorities.
The layoffs occur while Amazon increases spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company has approached some former employees about openings in AWS and its AI units. Similar realignments are taking place across the sector, with Meta eliminating about 8,000 positions in May and Microsoft cutting more than 5,000 jobs between July and September.
