The deal with Smurfit Westrock covers packaging assets and roughly 1,500 employees subject to antitrust approval.
Chilean forestry and pulp group CMPC agreed to sell its corrugated packaging business in Chile to Smurfit Westrock for $420 million on September 23, 2026. The transaction involves the companies Envases Impresos Cordillera and Chilena de Moldeados, known as Chimolsa. The agreed price represents a multiple of approximately 7.6 times EBITDA for the twelve months ended in June 2026.
The business included in the transaction covers paper production in Puente Alto, corrugated packaging plants in Buin, Til Til, and Osorno, molded packaging via Chimolsa, and paper recovery operations across 12 collection centers. CMPC will retain its presence in Puente Alto through its Softys facility, which is excluded from the deal.
Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, CEO of CMPC, stated that the transaction aligns with the company's long-term plan to focus resources where it has greater scale and competitive advantages. The deal remains subject to review and approval by Chile's antitrust regulator, the Fiscalía Nacional Económica. CMPC will continue managing the operations and their roughly 1,500 workers until the closing conditions are completed.
