The company acts after media scrutiny exposed counterfeit automotive parts.
On 16 September, eBay banned listings for airbags and airbag inflators across its online marketplace. The company is actively removing existing listings for those items and blocking new submissions under stricter automotive safety rules.
The restriction follows media scrutiny into potentially dangerous counterfeit airbags offered by third-party sellers on the platform. The platform operates across the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, and other global regions.
eBay carries a market capitalization of $48.5 billion. While eliminating airbags and inflators reduces a segment of automotive sales volume, the policy aims to curb exposure to accidents, buyer refunds, and liability disputes from unsafe components.
Investors will monitor subsequent quarterly reports to evaluate whether the ban affects gross merchandise volume or helps lower transaction losses and legal expenses.
