CEO Felipe Bayón highlights unconventional potential at the Acipet energy congress.
GeoPark is ready to participate in the development of unconventional oil and gas fields in Colombia, CEO Felipe Bayón stated during the XXIII Acipet Colombian Petroleum, Gas and Energy Congress on September 23, 2026. Bayón stressed that energy sovereignty requires taking control of national resources and bringing back technical expertise.
Citing data from the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH), Bayón noted that the Middle Magdalena Valley and Cesar Ranchería basins hold Colombia's largest prospective recoverable resources. He pointed to GeoPark's operational experience in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale formation, which uses hydraulic fracturing, as proof of its execution capabilities.
Bayón also detailed the company's Venezuelan operations at the Bare heavy oil asset in the Orinoco Belt, announced in early September. The four-phase redevelopment plan extends past 2045. The initial phase runs from 2026 to 2030 to restart production, followed by a second phase from 2031 to 2038 covering new drilling and workovers. Subsequent phases will maintain infrastructure and maximize ultimate recovery, with the goal of expanding output from 11,000 barrels of oil per day to between 85,000 and 90,000 barrels per day.
