The facility targets functional proteins, precision nutrition, and animal health.
JBS is using Florianópolis as a key base to expand biotechnology into a new business line. Speaking at the Bradesco BBI Agro Summit around 12 September 2026, global CEO Gilberto Tomazoni explained that the project began with cultivated meat research and evolved into a broader initiative covering functional proteins, precision nutrition, animal health, and alternative uses for lower-value raw materials.
In April, JBS inaugurated JBS Biotech at Sapiens Parque in Florianópolis. The facility covers more than 4,000 square meters and houses over 20 specialized laboratories spanning molecular biology, engineering, data analysis, and technology validation. Planned investment in the center reaches $37 million through the end of 2026.
Gilberto Tomazoni stated that the goal is to extract higher value across the production chain, such as identifying peptides and amino acids in raw materials currently directed to animal feed. The site tests experimental platforms including cell cultivation, fungi, and bacteria to supply both conventional foods and personalized nutrition.
The company chose Florianópolis due to the local innovation ecosystem and access to specialized talent needed to run the advanced research facility.
