The network ran a Danish checkout without sharing transaction fees or volume estimates.
Mastercard ran an artificial intelligence agent through a live checkout in Denmark on September 28, 2026. Shares of the global payments company fell about 0.1% to $567.12 at 12:02 p.m. Eastern Time following the announcement.
During the transaction, a customer instructed the AI agent to book a coffee tasting on Priceless.com and approved the purchase. The agent completed payment using a Danske Bank Mastercard. PayOS processed the checkout, and Mastercard Payment Passkeys authenticated the customer's consent.
The successful test provides a working demonstration of automated shopping. However, Mastercard disclosed no financial metrics, including expected payment volumes or processing fee rates, leaving the revenue potential of the technology unclear.
