Spatial intelligence pioneer Dr. Fei-Fei Li will join as chief scientist.
Advanced Micro Devices announced an $8.2 billion all-stock buyout of World Labs, a spatial intelligence startup based in San Francisco led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li. Shares of AMD barely flinched in after-hours trading following the announcement on Monday, September 28, 2026.
The transaction is slated to close by the end of 2026. World Labs develops frontier models that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image, or video inputs, targeting physical AI, simulation, and robotics.
Upon completion of the deal, Dr. Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. The World Labs team will continue its AI model research within AMD, helping shape the company's hardware and systems roadmap for 3D world-building workloads.
