Mexican remittances drop 3.6% to $5.45 billion in August
Banco de México reported inflows fell below forecasts despite higher total transaction volumes.
Remittances sent to Mexico fell 3.6% year-on-year in August 2026 to $5,452 million, Banco de México reported on 1 October 2026. The monthly total came in below expectations but remained above the $5 billion threshold. In July 2026, inflows had reached $5,570 million. By comparison, in July 2025, receipts totaled $5,578 million, representing an 8.3% annual decline.
Total transfer operations increased between July and August 2026, rising from 13 million to 13.2 million transactions, driven primarily by flows from the United States. However, the average remittance fell from $426 in July to $412 in August. A year earlier, the average transfer stood at $402. In cash and kind, the average amount increased from $415 in July to $458 in August.
Between January and August 2026, cumulative remittances totaled $41,802 million, an increase of 2.2% compared to $40,903 million received in the same period of 2025. Electronic transfers accounted for 99.1% of the total amount, reaching $41.4 million. Cash and kind represented 0.7%, or $277 million, while money orders accounted for 0.2%, or $78 million.
