Morgan Stanley explores potential merger with UBS
Swiss regulators are urging UBS to bolster capital, prompting talks with foreign banks.
Morgan Stanley is reportedly exploring a potential merger or combination with UBS AG. Swiss regulators are urging UBS to reinforce its capital position, which has prompted discussions with several large foreign lenders.
Any transaction between Morgan Stanley and UBS would rank among the largest cross-border banking deals in history. Morgan Stanley currently holds a market capitalization of about $304.1 billion, operating securities and advisory franchises across the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
A combination would expand Morgan Stanley's international footprint by pairing its existing $10 trillion in client assets with UBS's wealth network in Europe and other cross-border markets. However, integrating the two institutions could create larger balance sheets that bring stricter regulatory oversight, execution risks, and adviser retention challenges.
