Wall Street indices started the week in positive territory on October 5, 2026, driven by higher demand for technology shares that overshadowed concerns about elevated energy prices. The Nasdaq composite led the advances and reached a new historic record after rising 1.05% to 27,477.31 points.

The S&P 500 rose 0.66% to 7,773.95 points, while the Dow Jones gained 0.18% to end at 51,267.90 points. Mark Hackett of Nationwide told Bloomberg that investors have reasons to worry, but corporate earnings remain a counterweight supported by growth and margin expansion.

Stock benchmarks also advanced elsewhere in the world. In South America, Brazil's Bovespa index jumped 7.70% to 206,911.89 points following the first round of presidential elections. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 climbed 2.40% to 69,946.86 points.

In Mexico, the S&P/BMV IPC gained 0.69% to 64,975.08 units, while the FTSE BIVA added 0.56% to 1,316.80 units. Meanwhile, crude oil prices declined as Saudi Arabia cut selling prices for Asian buyers: West Texas Intermediate fell 1.84% to 89.43 dollars per barrel, and Brent fell 2.05% to 100.32 dollars per barrel.
