OpenAI turns ChatGPT into an app platform with dots agents
The company introduces autonomous dots agents powered by GPT-6 Astra at DevDay.
OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, presented a suite of features at its DevDay event that transforms ChatGPT into a platform to discover, install, and use applications. The announcement combined an expansion of ChatGPT's extension architecture with the launch of dots, autonomous artificial intelligence agents designed to handle tasks directly inside conversations.
ChatGPT now counts 1.2 billion weekly users. The system will suggest external applications within conversational flows when it detects a tool can solve a user's request. OpenAI also introduced Log in with ChatGPT, allowing users to carry their identity and paid AI usage quotas into third-party tools, debuting with 16 initial partners including Devin from Cognition, Notion, and Vercel.
The dots agents run on GPT-6 Astra, an AI model built for research, coding, and multi-step complex tasks. Each agent operates with its own cloud computer and browser, connecting to an ecosystem of more than 4,000 integrated applications to execute multi-step workflows or carry out read-only proactive research with user approval.
OpenAI also launched an enterprise application marketplace with over 30 partners, including Adobe, Figma, Salesforce, HubSpot, ServiceNow, Palo Alto Networks, and CrowdStrike, letting eligible clients allocate existing OpenAI spending toward partner software. OpenAI did not introduce a payment or revenue-sharing mechanism comparable to traditional app stores.
