IBM announced on October 1, 2026, a self-hosted deployment option for IBM Bob, its agentic software development platform. The update allows enterprises to run AI software development and modernization tools within on-premises, private-cloud, sovereign-cloud, and air-gapped environments without sending sensitive code or regulated data to external cloud services.

The release addresses strict compliance rules in regulated industries. According to a June 2026 report by the IBM Institute for Business Value, 68% of surveyed executives find meeting data residency and sovereignty rules across different geographies challenging. Additionally, research firm Futurum Research projects that hybrid and edge deployments will capture 44% of the AI infrastructure market by 2030, while public cloud share will fall to 46%.

The future of enterprise AI will depend on security, governance and sovereignty. Organizations need AI that operates inside environments they have control over, especially when working with sensitive code and regulated data.

Under the new setup, organizations can run supported licensed models on premises or connect IBM Bob to external model services via hybrid configurations, enabling development across distributed infrastructure.
