Siemens puts first Amtrak Airo trains into US service

Siemens Mobility celebrated the commercial debut of its new Airo trainsets on September 30, 2026, launching passenger operations on the Amtrak Cascades line across Washington and Oregon. Two trainsets began running four daily trips connecting Seattle, Portland, and Eugene, initiating a broader fleet replacement scheduled through early 2027.

The delivery stems from a 2021 deal that marked the largest contract in the North American history of Siemens Mobility. The full program encompasses 83 trainsets, including 86 Charger locomotives and 576 passenger coaches. Additional units are slated to enter service on the Northeast Regional and other state-supported routes through 2030.

Siemens manufactures the Buy America-compliant trains at its plants in Sacramento, California, and Lexington, North Carolina, drawing on nearly 100 suppliers across 31 states. The trainsets feature next-generation propulsion, predictive digital maintenance diagnostics, automated boarding lifts, and ergonomic passenger seating.

Siemens Mobility is a separately managed unit of Siemens AG. In its fiscal year 2025, ended September 30, 2025, the mobility business generated 12.4 billion euros in revenue with roughly 43,400 employees globally. In the same fiscal period, Siemens Group USA posted revenue of 24.427 billion dollars across 25 American manufacturing sites and more than 50,000 workers.
