Synopsys and OpenAI partner to develop GPT-Synopsys

Synopsys and OpenAI announced a multi-year strategic partnership on September 30, 2026, to develop and deliver GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model designed to automate and optimize semiconductor engineering workflows. The alliance includes a shared revenue framework, research and development collaboration, and joint global go-to-market initiatives.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will license Synopsys' electronic design automation (EDA) software to train and run the model. GPT-Synopsys will be trained to operate Synopsys tools directly, interpret design outputs, and iterate on semiconductor workflows. The system focuses on optimizing power, performance, and area (PPA) as well as managing timing and verification closure before final engineer review.

The service will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and integrate directly with the Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot platforms. Synopsys stated that early technology engagements are already underway with leading semiconductor customers. The joint offering will bundle compute, the specialized model, and software licenses, with customer design data encrypted and excluded from model training.
