TSMC 2nm technology powers MediaTek mobile chip

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited is expanding the rollout of its 2-nanometer manufacturing node. MediaTek launched its Dimensity 9600 Pro processor on 15 September using TSMC 2nm technology, bringing the newest node to a flagship mobile chip.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro uses TSMC's most advanced process. MediaTek stated that the chip's neural processor delivers 51% higher LLM prefill performance compared to the prior generation. MediaTek taped out a TSMC 2nm design last year, and the first smartphones featuring the silicon are expected soon. MediaTek previously supplied flagship phone makers including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, broadening TSMC's 2nm customer base beyond Apple and high-performance computing.

The node adoption comes alongside substantial industry investment in MediaTek. Nvidia invested $3.5 billion in MediaTek convertible bonds on 31 August, expanding a partnership to link MediaTek custom XPUs with Nvidia NVLink Fusion rack-scale systems. Alphabet also participated in MediaTek's $3.9 billion bond offering. In addition, Reuters reported that MediaTek's first accelerator for a major US cloud customer is scheduled for mass production in late 2026.

Because TSMC manufactures both commercial GPUs and custom silicon, the foundry is positioned to produce chips across competing platform architectures.
