US stock futures rise before September payroll data
Dow Jones futures gain 0.43% as consensus projects 84,000 new jobs and an unchanged 4.1% jobless rate.
US index futures traded higher on October 2 as investors awaited the September payroll report. Market consensus expects the addition of 84,000 jobs and an unchanged unemployment rate of 4.1%. Futures trading on federal funds pointed to a 72% probability that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates steady in October.
US Treasury yields climbed, recovering part of the previous session's declines, with long-term borrowing costs remaining close to multi-decade highs. In equity futures, Dow Jones futures rose 0.43%, S&P 500 futures gained 0.40%, and Nasdaq futures advanced 0.76%.
In Europe, markets moved higher ahead of eurozone inflation data and the US employment figures. The STOXX 600 climbed 0.89%, Germany's DAX gained 0.98%, the UK's FTSE 100 added 0.57%, France's CAC 40 rose 0.93%, and Italy's FTSE MIB advanced 0.81%.
Asia-Pacific markets closed mixed amid Middle East concerns and high bond yields. Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 0.94%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 2.60% (with an earlier reading at -2.8%), and India's Nifty 50 fell 0.88%. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.46% and Australia's ASX 200 added 0.79%, while mainland China's Shanghai SE was closed for a holiday.
Commodity prices saw oil retreat after earlier gains as attention shifted to recovering Middle East supply, balanced by Middle East tensions, US carrier movements in the Gulf, and Chinese limits on refined fuel exports. WTI crude fell 3.41% to $89.70 per barrel, while Brent crude dropped 2.74% to $99.78 per barrel. Bitcoin gained 1.89% over the prior 24 hours to $86,240.20.
