Treasury yields advance as Middle East tensions lift oil and weigh on equities
US stock indexes closed lower on Monday, September 28, 2026. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.67% to 51,481 points. The S&P 500 declined 0.77% to 7,683 points, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.92% to 26,820 points.
Selling pressure followed a rise in US Treasury yields. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.23%, while the 30-year yield advanced to 5.548%. Yields climbed amid inflation worries and Middle East uncertainty linked to the Strait of Hormuz, reducing expectations for Federal Reserve monetary easing.
Commodities saw mixed moves during the session. Brent crude rose 2.7% to top 107 dollars per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude increased 0.2% to 92.60 dollars per barrel following US President Donald Trump's rejection of an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Gold fell 3.86% to 4,154 dollars per ounce, and silver dropped 5.6% to 61.16 dollars per ounce.
Big tech shares weighed on the market. Advanced Micro Devices fell 3.6%, Micron Technology declined 2.6%, Amazon slipped 1.4%, and Microsoft dropped 1.35%. Meta fell 4.8% after launching Meta Enterprise Platform to sell artificial intelligence tools to businesses. In contrast, Nvidia rose 1.7% after expanding its share repurchase program by 150 billion dollars to a total of 235 billion dollars, the largest buyback authorization ever by a US company. Investors await the August consumer price index report due later this week.
