US stocks rise as the S&P 500 gains 0.19%

Major Wall Street indexes advance on 1 October 2026 ahead of crucial US labour data.

Equities on the New York Stock Exchange finished higher on Thursday, 1 October 2026, ahead of the US September employment report. The upcoming jobs print is expected to serve as a catalyst for the monetary policy direction of the Federal Reserve.

The S&P 500 gained 0.19% to finish at 7,666.45 points. The Nasdaq and the Dow Jones each rose 0.04%, ending at 26,871.60 and 50,926.56 points, respectively.

According to analysts at GBM, markets continued to process recent macroeconomic data. The personal consumption expenditures price index landed below expectations, although Treasury bond yields remained elevated. The analysts stated, translated from Spanish, that attention now shifts to the labour market with the release of initial jobless claims and the September employment report, both relevant to upcoming monetary policy decisions.

International equity markets posted mixed results. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 climbed 3.30% to 68,956.72 points. In Europe, London's FTSE 100 declined 1.68% to 10,428.27 points. In Mexico, the S&P/BMV IPC fell 0.60% to 63,828.60 points, and the FTSE-BIVA retreated 0.63% to 1,293.85 points.

In commodities, crude oil prices advanced on risks of renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran. West Texas Intermediate rose 2.71% to 92.87 dollars per barrel, while Brent increased 5.55% to 103.47 dollars per barrel.
