Labor contracts covering almost 4,000 sanitation workers represented by Teamsters Local 396 expired at midnight on September 30. Employers, including Waste Management and Republic Services, failed to reach tentative agreements with the union before the deadline.

The expired agreements affect workers across five Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego. Other companies involved in the negotiations include Athens Services, CR&R, WARE Disposal, Park Disposal, and AAA Disposal.

Teamsters Local 396 stated that the lapse increases the risk of labor disruptions across the regional sanitation sector. The union confirmed that it plans to continue bargaining in good faith while demanding higher compensation, better benefits, and stronger workplace protections.

Companies have the ability to prevent labor disputes by getting serious at the bargaining table and reaching fair agreements. Our members will continue doing everything possible to win strong contracts, and they are prepared to stand together and fight for as long as it takes.
