Aeroméxico suspends all flights at Tulum airport

Aeroméxico will temporarily suspend all flights to and from Tulum airport starting September 30, according to statements the airline made to El Financiero. Flight schedules show the carrier no longer lists services connecting Mexico City with the terminal.

The airline stated that September 30 will mark its final day of operations at the terminal. It attributed the decision to market conditions and the need to maximize its route network.

Tulum airport began operations on December 15, 2023, under military administration. Managed by Grupo Mundo Maya, the airport quickly reached one million domestic and international passengers. However, the withdrawal of airline subsidies led to a wave of flight cancellations over the past year.

Tourism to the destination has also faced pressure from severe sargassum seaweed arrivals and increased access fees to key sites such as the archaeological zone. Since the military took over tourism management in Tulum, visitor numbers have declined substantially, causing hotel occupancy to drop, real estate appreciation to slow, and new investment to stall.
