The consumer protection body investigates repair charges linked to system updates.
Apple is facing an escalated investigation by India's Central Consumer Protection Authority over its software warranty terms. Media reports confirmed on 15 September 2026 that the regulator issued a formal notice dated 29 July 2026 regarding expensive repair requirements after software updates.
The watchdog cited screen repair charges that reach 27,900 INR, or roughly 291 USD, to replace an out-of-warranty iPhone 15 display in the country. The investigation focuses on whether hardware issues triggered after operating system updates should require costly out-of-warranty fixes from consumers.
Apple submitted a response to the authority on 20 August 2026. The company stated that the inquiry was based on 75 consumer complaints. It also noted that 11% of active iPhones in India were running iOS 18 as of June 2026.
The scrutiny arrives as Apple expands its presence in the Indian smartphone market. Data from Counterpoint Research shows the company grew its market share in India from 4% in 2022 to 9% in 2025.
