Pilot tests start in Northern California with Chipotle and Popeyes, targeting average drop times under five minutes.
DoorDash announced on September 30, 2026, the launch of DoorDash Air, an end-to-end autonomous drone delivery system designed for local businesses. Pilot operations will launch in Northern California in partnership with restaurant brands including Chipotle Mexican Grill, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and local eatery Momo N Curry.
The custom autonomous aircraft features six slow-spinning propellers on its arms, limiting cruising noise to roughly that of a passing car at delivery height. It includes a winch system for pickups and drop-offs alongside safety failsafes. DoorDash noted that historical order data shows about 80% of its typical restaurant orders are light and small enough to fly safely on the drone. Initial testing showed average delivery times from restaurant kitchens to doorsteps in under five minutes.
DoorDash Air integrates directly into the company's Autonomous Delivery Platform (ADP). The system routes orders across human couriers, ground robots such as Dot, and drones based on distance, weight, weather, and kitchen preparation times. DoorDash said it has already logged hundreds of thousands of autonomous deliveries across its network.
