The deepwater asset expands exploration acreage near gas discoveries holding over 14 Tcf of gas.
Italy's Eni was awarded the Sapukala block during Indonesia's first Petroleum Bidding Round of 2026. The contract gives the company a 100% operating interest in the offshore acreage located in East Kalimantan.
The Sapukala block sits in water depths between 1,000 and 2,500 meters in the Kutei Basin. It is located directly adjacent to acreage held by Eni and close to the North Hub developments, which include the Geng North, Gehem, Gula and Geliga discoveries. According to Eni, those discoveries hold more than 14 trillion cubic feet of gas in place and approximately 800 million barrels of condensate.
Eni identified the block as highly prospective after completing a joint study with an Indonesian academic institution. The company also recently completed a new seismic acquisition campaign across the area, which will support detailed prospect evaluations.
Eni has operated in Indonesia since 2001, directly operating the Peri-Mahakam and Makassar Strait blocks. In June 2026, Eni established Searah, a 50-50 joint venture with Malaysia's Petronas. Searah manages the North Hub developments and holds 19 gas assets across Indonesia and Malaysia, producing roughly 350,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day with a target of more than 500,000 boe/d by 2028.
