The partnership at ETH Zurich stems from an offset deal with defense agency armasuisse.
Lockheed Martin and IBM have established a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich through an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement. The initiative will host Switzerland's first IBM Quantum System Two, powered by the Quantum Nighthawk processor, at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano.
The facility will operate alongside ETH Zurich. It combines IBM's quantum computing and artificial intelligence capabilities with Lockheed Martin's focus on quantum sensing and additive manufacturing, targeting applications in national security and complex industrial operations.
Lockheed Martin is relying on its record backlog and multi-year program visibility to co-fund long-term research. However, the company faces margin pressure from program ramp costs, redesigns, lower profitability on select contracts, and risks tied to government procurement and supply chain timing.
