Méliuz pauses app bitcoin trading but keeps crypto treasury
Users have until October 30 to liquidate balances following central bank rules.
Brazilian cashback and technology company
Méliuz has paused the buying and selling of bitcoin inside its mobile application. Customers using the retail service have until October 30 to liquidate their remaining cryptocurrency balances.
The company stated to Valor that the decision does not affect its corporate bitcoin treasury strategy, which it adopted in 2025. Méliuz reiterated that it continues to view bitcoin as a long-term store of value and maintains its commitment to generating BTC yield for shareholders.
Méliuz explained that retail crypto trading was a secondary feature used by a small portion of its user base. The company attributed the suspension to new regulatory requirements from the Central Bank of Brazil for firms offering cryptoassets to end users. Management decided not to pursue compliance right now given its strategic priorities, noting the small unit will not affect company results, though it may re-evaluate the decision later.
The announcement follows a shareholder vote on October 5 approving a capital reduction of 160 million reais to establish a capital reserve due to excessive capital, without canceling shares or distributing cash. Shareholders also approved a new stock option plan replacing a 2020 program. In August, Méliuz had already disclosed a new share buyback program and an expansion of its bitcoin treasury strategy to optimize capital allocation.
