The new limits start in November and affect roughly 4% of Game Pass subscribers.
On 3 September 2026, CNBC reported that Microsoft will end unlimited cloud gaming for its Game Pass subscribers starting in November. Under the new rules, Game Pass Ultimate members will receive 15 hours per month, Premium members will get 10 hours, and Essential members will be capped at 5 hours.
Microsoft stated that the monthly caps will affect roughly 4% of Game Pass subscribers who stream heavily. Players who exhaust their allotted time, as well as non-subscribers who want to stream titles they own, will be able to buy additional cloud gaming hours through the Xbox Store.
The measure comes as new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma works to improve the division's profitability and align infrastructure spending with customer revenue. The shift follows a 2026 transition to usage-based billing for GitHub Copilot, reflecting a broader effort across Microsoft to manage computing costs while competing against cloud gaming alternatives such as Nvidia's GeForce Now.
