Microsoft revealed its latest artificial intelligence chip, named Maia 300, on October 12, 2026. The launch is part of the company's effort to deploy proprietary hardware across its data centers.

The company projects that the Maia 300 will process 40% more tokens per megawatt of power than the leading GPU-based systems on the market. Microsoft also stated that the chip features the highest memory bandwidth in its class.

Microsoft explained that the Maia line will serve as the primary AI inference system for its products and services. Installation of the Maia 300 in Microsoft's cloud computing infrastructure is scheduled to begin in 2027, joining its predecessor, the Maia 200.

The company expects to run multiple gigawatts of AI workloads on Maia hardware starting next year. The move highlights how major technology firms are expanding in-house hardware to curb reliance on costly third-party chips.
